Diamond in the Rough (Hidden Beauty)

Which landscapes do you enjoy? Maybe it’s pine forests (like my mom), palm trees and sand, or sagebrush and juniper trees.

Whatever your favorite scenery or place in the world is (I’d love to hear in the comments what it is!), there’s bound to be an opposite for you. The place that is boring, or even ugly.

For me, it was southern Idaho. I didn’t hate it, but I disliked driving through it or staying there for any period of time. It’s mostly grass fields or sagebrush, for miles and miles. Very boring, right?

I used to think so, but I’ve had a change of perspective recently about Idaho, and now I think it is one of the most beautiful, mysterious, and amazing places I’ve been to.

What changed?

Well, it mostly had to do with one amazing person I met at summer camp last year. I will call him Skipper for now (but if you are reading this, I think you know who you are). 😀

We were talking about places we’d been. I’d driven through Idaho sort of recently, and I shared my opinion of it being a very boring place to drive through.

Skipper disagreed. He told me he thought it was a beautiful place and well worth visiting. The sagebrush is a peaceful landscape and there is so much variety!

I was sort of taken aback, but I wanted to know what made him think that.

He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: (Eccl. 3:11a)

He told me that God made every place beautiful and different for a purpose, even if it is hard to see at first. He encouraged (and convinced) me to appreciate the true beauty of Idaho.

This is so true! It changed my perspective, not only about southern Idaho but about a lot of other things too. There is beauty in everything God makes: we just have to trust Him and look for it!

Perhaps you have had a hard week. You are exhausted and just want to take a nap or relax and watch a movie or something. I would encourage you, before you do that, to step outside for a moment. It’s spring now, and the flowers are blooming! Well, they are where I live, but even if it’s still wintery and cold for you, remember to find the beauty. Raindrops on the window. Snow on the ground. A bare tree waving in the wind.

Although it may seem like less-than-perfect weather, God gave it to us for a reason. Maybe the plants need the rain badly. (It was pouring rain for the last week at my house, and now all the grass is vibrant green!)

Just looking out the window for a moment can help reset your mind so much! I promise, it helps. Maybe you can say a quick prayer of thanks to God as well. This, like nothing else, will give you peace.

In one of my previous posts, I recommended to-do lists for relieving stress. This helps a lot! But nothing helps like God, so make sure to go to Him with your list as well. Even if you have a ton of things to do, think, How can I glorify God while I’m doing this? and, What beauty can I find in this chore? Once you figure that out (and it may be hard!), you’re all set to get to work.

Once you can find beauty in the small stuff, you can do so in the rest of your life. And you should totally visit southern Idaho sometime because it really is spectacular!

God bless,

Janet

Learning Curve: the Ark Encounter!

Well, I could have named this post ‘I’m back: again’ but I decided that might be a little arbitrary. If you remember, I posted last Monday that I was on vacation! Well, I’m here today to tell you all about it. 😃

First off, we went to the Ark Encounter in Kentucky. This is a life-size Noah’s Ark built using the dimensions in the Bible.

And believe me, those dimensions are HUGE!!! Just looking at this Ark from afar is astounding, but when you get up close… oh, my. It’s breathtaking!

Of course, it would have to be, to hold all the animals that Noah was instructed to take on the Ark! 🐪 🐕 🐈 🦖 🕊

Now, this model is not filled out how Noah’s Ark would have been—with tons of cages and animals. There is a little bit of that, just so you can see what it might have been like for Noah’s family, but the main purpose of this modern day Ark is to provide information and proof for the Flood, the Ark, and what followed.

To sum it up, it’s there to help you strengthen your faith in the Bible.

Well, it definitely did that for me! Throughout the whole Ark (there are three levels), scattered among the animal cages (they’ve made models of the animals that are super lifelike!), there are AMAZING displays describing how life might have been before the flood, how many animals Noah would have taken on the Ark and how they all fit, how the after-effects of the flood caused the Ice Age, etc.!

These displays are masterfully made, easy to read, and super artistic! I never felt overwhelmed by the amount of them, or had the feeling that I had missed something and would have to loop back.

Plus, the displays are super informational! They give you resources so you can do your own research, as well as Bible verses that prove or point to what they’re saying.

I learned a lot on this trip for sure, and even though there was so much that I have a very small chance of remembering it all, I have absorbed a lot and my inquisitive mind is turned on! I definitely want to do my own research on this type of thing in the future. 😊

Also, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to whoever made all the miniature models—they are astounding! So detailed and tiny! Around the whole Ark, there are mini models of the Ark and other related things. There’s even a cutout of the Ark that’s maybe three or four feet long, with all the tiny cages and stairs and barrels… 😯

But that’s not all. We also visited the Creation Museum, about 45 minutes away. It’s made by the same people (Answers in Genesis) and it focuses on the creation of the world and the surrounding events. They also have TONS of miniatures (mostly of the Ark 😂 ) that show it being built all the way to the flood itself!

One last thing: there are animatronics of people— Adam and Eve in the Creation Museum, Noah and his family in the Ark. They move and talk! Their mouths are a little creepy though…

I really enjoyed myself last week, and it was so worth it! Learning tons and admiring other’s creativity in the design and layout of all of it was amazing!

Have you ever been to the Ark Encounter? If so, tell me what you thought of it in the comments! If you haven’t been, would you like to? What seems most interesting out of all the things I told you?

Hope you have a wonderful week and God bless,

Janet 🐪

PS: I forgot to tell you about the amazing Zoo! Man, there’s a lot of stuff I didn’t know about sloths, bearcats (it’s a real thing!), ostriches, and the like! Oh, and the cranes… they are gorgeous! 💜
